A short tour around my favorite room in my house.

Now, this post probably won't feel much like my first one, full of little zingers and sassy comments. Instead it'll be much more sincere, which is fine because I am a multidimensional person who can sometimes be funny and sometimes not. I wanted to let you all get to know me more by showing you the most personal space in my house.

“My bedroom is my sanctuary, it’s like a refuge.” - Vera Wang

My Bedroom, My Haven

You’ve heard people say that before, or something close to it. “Your bedroom ought to be your haven.” Sure, it’s cheesy and a bit dramatic. The point is that your bedroom should be yours. It should show your personality and it should make you happy.

I love my bedroom because it really does feel like me. It’s calm, it’s organized and it has the colors and textures that I love. All around my room you can see things that speak to who I am if you really stop and look.

I can be a bit of a perfectionist, but I also appreciate simplicity. I want my things to stay organized, but I also want them to contribute towards the beauty of my space rather than completely hide them. To that end, I have been very specific about the storage items I choose in my room.

I think it is important to have some elements that are just pretty in a room. I could write at great length about my feelings on aesthetic vs. functionality. But sometimes, things are allowed to just be pretty.

For me, art has always presented a bit of a challenge. It's hard to find just the right thing to put on a wall. Sometimes you may have a sentimental piece that you would love to use, but it just doesn’t really fit. For this reason, I have rarely ever had art in my room. Last year I came across artist Jenny McGee and finally found the right art for my room. Her series of prints focused on memorable locations around Missouri were the perfect blend of sentimental and aesthetically cohesive with the rest of my room.

I love nature, but admittedly don’t spend enough time in it. I also believe that having greenery around in your home is just a good idea for anyone. I am still holding out hope that I someday find the time to become a full on plant mom, but alas, that day has not yet come so it’s fake plants for me.

My Big Girl Bed

My bed is probably my favorite thing in my room. I am constantly redecorating it, not because I am never satisfied, but because I love discovering new ways that it can be pretty, new color schemes, new pillow combinations, etc. Recently, I ponied up and got myself a new comforter and a real grown up duvet cover from West Elm. In this latest rendition of my bed, I also have my standard euro throw pillows in the back and flannel sheets and shams from Target.

While my overall bedding is a combination of affordable and pricey, I can tell you now that the pricey stuff is worth it. I feel fine using standard Target brand sheets, because in all honesty, their sheets are pretty great anyway. But the quality of my new duvet is something I have never experienced before in a bed. I still look forward to swapping out shams and sheets of many different colors, but I can tell you this duvet isn’t going anywhere.

My Half Read Books and My Nightly Routine

So I know that our classic movie heroine who has her life together is always reading peacefully before bed. We assume that this must be her 10th book this year and that she is constantly diving into the latest and greatest topics. Just the beacon of a healthy, informed adult. Well, I have read some of the books on that shelf. Some, I have even read more than once, at the expense of all the others. But the truth is, I probably won’t ever finish all of them. Some are more like keepsakes, things I want to have a copy of just to know that they’re there. Others are the product of inside jokes between friends.

My bookshelf is also where I keep the self care products that are part of my nightly routine. I am not someone who can just plop into bed and call it a night. I need to calm my body in order to get into the right head space for sleeping. I love having things like my jade roller, pillow mist (just trust me it smells so good), lotion and essential oil diffuser. Treating myself to soothing things each night is a big part of what makes my room my haven. A bedroom is not just for sleeping and storing your stuff, it is one of the places where you should be fully yourself and take the greatest care of yourself.

I hope you enjoyed all these photos I took after cleaning my room for the first time in a month. If you would like links to any of the products I mentioned, or any that you saw but I didn’t mention, just ask and I will try to find it for you!
